During the week just ended, an important appointment was held for the UISP Territorial Committee Ciriè Settimo Chivasso as part of the European Project SPIRITS, which addresses the training of operators who carry out voluntary work within the detention facilities, in order to use sport not only as a means of emancipation, but also of social redemption. At this juncture, the UISP Committee Ciriè Settimo Chivasso, leader of the project, avails itself of the collaboration of four other European realities: first and foremost, the UISP Alexandria Territorial Committee – which has been collaborating with the city’s prisons for over 20 years, the San Casa di Rec Guests. Michele and the District Prison “Cantiello and Gaeta- the Association Sport For All Suceava from Romania, the Courage Foundation from Bulgaria and the Freedom Gate Greece from Greece, which has already worked in detention facilities, but in the juvenile field. After the kick off meeting and the first LTTA -Learning Teaching and Training Activity- of the month of April, which saw the presence of numerous experts working in the field, from psychologists, to sports operators, passing by teachers of physical education to conclude with the representatives of the Penitentiary Police, the representatives of the two Committees participated in the second LTTA, held in Plovdiv, European Capital of Culture 2019, and intended exclusively for volunteers of Bulgarian nationality. This second meeting saw the reports and experiences of the President of the UISP Territorial Committee Alessandria Mara Scagni; of the Deputy Chief of Penitentiary Police of Alessandria Giulio Romeo; of the Instructor of Fitness in the Alexandrian prisons for UISP Davide Cerutti – whose experience served as a comparison between the Italian and Bulgarian sports activities – the president of the Courage Foundation Lucia Veleva; the Director of the Social Activities Department of Plovdiv Kiril Sivkov prison; the Director of the Social Activities Department of Stara Zagora prison, Radost Nayedevona and the Mental and Social Health Advocate Emilia Crushkov of UPSDA. Also present at the meeting was the International Project Manager of the UISP Committee Ciriè Settimo Chivasso Francesca Di Feo and the Director and Coordinator of the SPIRITS project Roberto Rinaldi, who also delivered the banner of the lead organization to the Director of the Penitentiary Institute of Plovdiv. If the first appointment was dedicated to classroom training, the following days focused on “on the field” meetings, with visits to the prison institutes of Plovdiv and Stara Zagora. “In both structures we received an excellent welcome, with the possibility of visiting all the rooms of the two prisons, from the canteen, to the cells, to the gyms where the various sports activities take place. Here in surprise, in the detention facility of Stara Zagora, we witnessed a Boxing Tournament inside the prison, which was supposed to take place on October 5, but was anticipated in our honor. It was certainly a nice thing, pleasant and unexpected, since once the event was over, each of us was rewarded with a nameplate by the Vice-President of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee, ”explained Rinaldi, who declared himself very satisfied with the training event, judged “valid and multi-faceted, with multiple issues addressed”.
